Vegetarian Festival

Post by The Family » 26 Sep 2009 12:27

The Vegetarian festival in Bangsaphan Chinese Temple (opposite the Guest House) will be held between 17th October - 27th October 2009, Open from Dawn - till very late.

As far as we have been told, this festival holds many kind of shows including: Hot coals walking, Sitting on a bed of nails, hand fire displays. Some sort of knife & needle display, apparently, they get a knife and somehow put it through their cheeks, ears etc.!!! Free vegetarian food (donations appreciated). Big screen cinema and plenty other sorts of entertainment, well worth a visit. :)

I hope this will be another photo opportunity for you guys to show those of us stuck in less exotic places such as Bristol what we're missing. As somebody wrote on another forum I frequent recently, "If there's no photos, it isn't real." :D

Tesssagan gin je occurs every year in BS and is going on from September 26th until October 6th. You'll notice all of the extra food stalls in town with the yellow flags, they're selling aharn je which are Chinese vegetarian dishes. There are also processions of white robed worshipers in the back of pickups often impaled on sharp things.

During a period of nine days, those who are participating in the festival dress all in white and gin je กินเจ, which has come to be translated as abstinence from eating meat, poultry, seafood, and dairy products. Vendors and proprietors of restaurants indicate that je food is for sale at their establishments by putting a yellow flag out with the word เจ (je) written on it in red. However, technically, only food prepared in the sacred kitchen of the Chinese temple (in Thailand, called san jao ศาลเจ้า or ahm อ๊ำ) is je, as it must undergo a series of rituals before it can be given that name.

Many people lined in the streets of Phuket Town last night as the Vegetarian Festival drew to a close with street processions arriving at Saphan Hin for the midnight finale. Many fire crackers were lit during the festivities, leaving the streets blanketed in smoke and resonating with the sounds of small and sometimes large explosions.
