Bangsaphan bird buildings

Post by buksida » 20 Feb 2011 09:33

Heard a rumour that the local govt authorities will be restricting those bird buildings that have taken over BS town.

They are bricked up buildings with holes to allow swifts/swallows in and out, they nest in the buildings and the spit produced to create the nest is more expensive than gold in weight. Very popular with the Chinese apparently so naturally it has become a lucrative business around here.

The birds are lured in with recorded bird-song however thousands of them living in a small town is beginning to cause issues apparently.

Everytime I take a drive into town there seems to be another one going up ... surely the viable population of these types of birds cannot support all of these 'hotels'?

Why are there none in other places - is it only Bangsapan that attracts them?

Reminds me that much of the available housing in Vancouver is now being gobbled up by indoor marijuana cultivators. Much talk like "my neighbor's a vegetable", and "Even if we're not home,we'll leave the lights on for you, dear".

Once you've had swallow spit, you never go back.
