Huge trash piles wash up on Koh Talu beaches

A huge amount of garbage has been found floating off three beaches on Koh Talu in Bang Saphan Noi district, prompting concern that it will affect coral reefs and egg-laying sites of endangered sea turtles.

More than three tonnes of trash were collected from Ao Yai, Ao Thian and Ao Muk beaches on the island in the southern tourist province from Wednesday to Friday, said Phaopipat Charoenpak, marketing manager of Koh Talu Island Resort and secretary-general of the Siam Marine Rehabilitation Foundation.

The trail of garbage, including plastic and glass bottles, foam boxes and lightbulbs, was about one kilometre long on Ao Yai and Ao Thian beaches and about 400 metres long on Ao Muk, he said. Traces of engine oil were also found.

Mr Phaopipat said resort staff and foundation volunteers had been collecting the trash every morning since Wednesday from the beaches, which are popular snorkelling sites because of their bountiful coral reefs.

To all my friends and contacts in the Bang Saphan area.
As you can see from the attached photos there's been tons and tons of rubbish / trash washed up on our beaches.
A group of us (Trash Heroes') usually have a clean-up at 8 - 9am on Monday mornings on stretches of the Suan Luang Beach area and this is a never-ending task.
I am asking everyone if they could make a special effort this Monday and come along and help before this rubbish is washed back into the sea ruining our oceans and destroying sea life, it will also make our beaches cleaner for the benefit of both the locals and tourists.
If you have never been on one of these cleanups please come along and help even if it's a one off for you.
We meet at Roy Tawan at 8am and supply rubbish bags, pickup sticks and when we are finished we usually catch up for a chat, drinks, snacks and fruit with the compliments of Roy Tawan.
Thank you for listening and hope to see you in the morning.

A great turn out today for the beach cleanup, 20 Trash Heroes collected over 200 Kg which took 2 pickups to move it.
Nice to see some new faces this morning and hopefully will see you next week. Thanks to everyone.

Please print and distribute these to anyone that is burning plastic - you could save their lives (or at lease extend it).

Farangs rarely burn trash - but here is the crux of it: http://www.wecf.eu/cms/download/2004-20 ... astics.pdf

Most Farangs know the dangers of burning plastic and the dangers to health, someone could be burning plastic hundreds of miles away but it will still affect all of us and get into the water and food chain.
There are so many people in Asia who burn plastic and just don’t realize the damage that there are doing.
If as many of us as possible print Buksida posters and spread them about it might just help a little, of course we will have to be tactful about this as we don’t want the Thais to think that we are taking over and telling them what to do.

The posters are for the 99.9% that are burning plastic where we live - not the 0.1%.

Let’s stick to the topic and keep politics out of it, our aim is to try to prevent the burning of plastics.
